West Mercia Neighbourhood Watch is the independent Force Area Association organisation providing support to Neighbourhood Watch members and Schemes across the counties of Shropshire, Herefordshire, and Worcestershire, plus the unitary authority of Telford and Wrekin, and is the recognised “Force Area Association” for the West Mercia Police Force Area by the National Neighbourhood Watch governing body. Force Area Associations are run by Neighbourhood Watch volunteers (not by the police), and at a local level their role includes providing guidance and, where necessary, policies on the details of how Neighbourhood Watch operates within their area. This covers things such as providing best practice guidance for any processes new schemes should follow, and how to maintain a good working relationship with the police at the Safer Neighbourhood Team level. Neighbourhood Watch Network is the national umbrella organisation for the movement based in London. Neighbourhood Watch is the largest voluntary crime prevention movement in England and Wales, with in excess of 2.3 million members. It is a charitable organisation, with schemes organised by volunteers, supported by volunteer associations like the WMNWFAA. The core beliefs of Neighbourhood Watch centre around the power of neighbours working together to build safer, vibrant and inclusive communities, help prevent crime and make a positive, sustainable difference within local communities. Local Neighbourhood Watch schemes work in a variety of ways reflecting the needs of the local community. These may include: sharing crime prevention advice and information; running awareness campaigns; holding social events and awards for local people and businesses; leading community projects, such as litter picks, a community café, flood defence response, presentations in schools and work with young people and children, and community messaging with the police.
