Marches Meadow Group is open to all with an interest in the conservation and management of meadows, their plants and animals in the Welsh Marches. Currently the core area for the group covers the area bounded by Shrewsbury in the north, Montgomery in the west, Church Stretton in the east and Bishop’s Castle in the south. Outside this area the group can offer members plant surveys and advice on meadow creation and management. The Marches Meadow Group arranges visits to meadows with knowledgeable plant specialists, scything training and opportunities, talks on meadow management and conservation and courses on related topics, eg plant identification. For meadow owners in the core area, the Group has hay-making equipment of various sizes and employs contractors to cut and make hay on members’ meadows. (There is a charge for this service.) For smaller areas scything may be an option. The Group offers all members a plant survey of their meadow or lawn. In addition, the Group has a seed harvester and can offer seed collected from existing high quality meadows, or can use the green hay technique to increase the plant diversity of grasslands of all sizes from lawns upwards. The Group also has links to groups with an interest in surveying and managing road verges, churchyards and amenity areas to maintain and increase diversity.
