Higginson’s Equine Assisted Learning is a small, bespoke, outdoor facility offering Equine Assisted Learning (EAL). EAL is a ground based activity where people interact with the delightful ponies to bring about positive outcomes. Children and adults are encouraged to build a relationship with the ponies, recognising them as sentient beings. Observe them and notice how they communicate with each other. Learn how to communicate with them too. An overview of some of the activities on offer include: horse care brushing, feeding, watering etchorse handling (moving the horse in different directions using observation, body language and intention, etc)horse health observing signs of well being or ill health etc. Try out your new found skills playing on the agility course, working with a horse through a maze of poles, hop over a show jumping course or try out your accuracy in a dressage arena, (all beginners, low key and supported). Higginson’s Equine Assisted Learning welcome all ages and abilities; unfortunately they are not yet able to accommodate wheelchairs users, but are working on it. They provide a supportive, non judgemental, learner led, and person centred experience where learners can feel confident, build their self esteem, practice mindfulness and be in the moment to gain the most benefit from being in the environment with the ponies. Feel the warmth on your face, see the trees swaying in the breeze, listen to the birds singing and watch them flying above. Enjoy the sense of peace this brings. They are also working in collaboration with a fabulous counsellor (Matt Owen), scpeaceyoga and Jill Higginson as Reiki Master, giving treatments in the beautiful bell tent onsite. They are introducing new programmes for the summer to accommodate toddlers, preparing horse related games and activities and continuing to build a relationship with the ponies whereby learners have the opportunity to play with the ponies at liberty. The don’t expect perfection, every little change is a joy to be celebrated. We are all a work in progress!
