The Gild of Freemen of Shrewsbury exists to protect the Legality of the Freedom; to promote the historical institution of the Freedom and to inform interested parties about the development of medieval Towns. The Gild provides support for the office of Mayor and charity work is aimed at all interested parties in the Town. Membership of the Gild is available to all hereditary Freemen of Shrewsbury. Freemen of other towns or cities are eligible to be Associate members. Any male or female, on attaining the age of 21 years, who is a direct descendant of a Freeman of Shrewsbury (male or female) is eligible to be sworn a Freeman of Shrewsbury. Lists of names of Freemen from Medieval times to the present are available. For more information, please follow the link to visit their website. Please note: Freemen should not be confused with a completely different organisation, the Freemasons – whom the Oxford Dictionary defines as “members of an International Fraternity for mutual help and friendship”.
