The Red Box Project is a community-based, not-for-profit initiative, which aims to support young people throughout their periods by providing red boxes filled with free period products to local schools. The Project was founded in March 2017 with the aim of giving young people in their local area access to sanitary products. After reading about ‘Period Poverty‘, the organisers discovered that young people were missing out on their education because they couldn’t afford the products they needed during their period. Following contact with several secondary schools in their local area, to ask if a constantly stocked box of menstrual products would be welcomed, feedback from teachers was that the issue was real and the resource was needed. Recognising that the need was nationwide, the project has been rolled out across the country with local people getting together to set up Red Boxes filled with tampons, pads, tights and underwear which are then delivered to local schools. The groups then fundraise by way of collections, craft sales, and donations drives, to ensure their boxes never become empty.
