Makaton is an internationally recognised communication programme, used in more than 40 countries worldwide to help people with learning disability to communicate. Makaton uses signs, symbols and speech to help people communicate. It is designed to support spoken language and the signs and symbols are used with speech in spoken word order. With Makaton, children and adults can communicate straight away using the signs and symbols. Many then drop the signs or symbols, naturally, at their own pace, as they develop speech. The Makaton Charity provides a wide range of training for parents, carers and professionals. Their training is delivered through a network of licensed Makaton Tutors across the UK. They also have a wide range of printed and electronic resources, provide free advisory services and work with others to make information accessible.
