The Oswestry Local History Centre is based in Oswestry Library, and looked after by volunteers from the Oswestry Family and Local History Group.The Centre is open to the public on Monday morning from 10am to 12noon and Friday afternoon from 1.30pm to 4pm, there are family historians and local historians waiting to answer questions. Queries can also be sent via the Oswestry Family & Local History Group website or the Oswestry Library website.Volunteers with family history research experience are always welcome. They have access to the following information:Border Counties Advertizer from 1849 to present day, with a biographical Index to Marriages and Deaths and other significant events in the lives of local people and places covered by the local press.Parish Records for most of the churches in the Oswestry area – there is currently a project to get as many of these records up to date by photographing the Parish Books, so far they have completed Llanymynech, Morton and Selattyn.Monumental Inscriptions for most of the burial grounds in the Oswestry area and again they are constantly updating their collection.Various Trade Directories from 1822-1967.Electoral Registers from 1939, 1959-2002.Various local newspapers, either held on Micro Film, Hard Copy or CD-Rom.Parish and village magazines and newsletters.Tithe Apportionments for the Oswestry area, field name maps, Ordnance Survey maps 1873 onwards, Street Maps and a range of local and county maps.Over 2,500 photographs of the area which are also available on their website.Parish Packs for some local villages, over 240 folders on local places and 18 folders on local people.1300 volumes in their Welsh collection and hundreds of reference books for the Oswestry area.Their website contains interesting articles, WW1 Roll of Honour database, BMD database, over 2,500 photographs and a family/local history help page.For more information, please follow the link to visit the Library webpage, or contact using the details provided.
