The Lily Foundation is the UK’s leading mitochondrial disease charity, and aims to: raise funds in order to educate and raise public awareness about mitochondrial diseases, fund ongoing research into finding treatments and a cure, and offer ongoing support to affected patients, their families and carers. The charity achieves these aims through annual events such as the Lily Family Weekend – a unique residential weekend including social activities, informative talks and workshops from the UK’s top mitochondrial doctors for adults, and plenty of fun activities to keep little ones of all ages entertained. There is also an activity-based adventure weekend for young adults run in a similar format. The Lily Foundation also works in partnership with specialist mitochondrial clinics in Newcastle, Oxford and London to co-host Patient Information Days – occasions which offer an informal atmosphere for mito patients to socialise and receive information and support from medical professionals. Mito is an incurable genetic disorder that affects people in very different ways. It often affects babies and young children, and the long-term prognosis for sufferers is poor, as there is currently no cure, but there is always someone to talk to at the Lily Foundation, whether it’s a specific question about any aspect of the disease, a reassuring chat, or some emotional support. Please follow the related links provided to join one of their private Facebook groups for affected adults or for families whose children are affected by the disease. Once a week a virtual coffee morning is held, where patients scattered around the country can get together over Zoom to feel less isolated and better informed about their condition.
