Ellesmere Yard on the Llangollen canal has a unique heritage status as the UK’s only remaining operational canal yard dating back to around 1806. The Yard housed the office and workshops of the former Ellesmere Canal Company, where pioneering civil and canal engineers William Jessop and Thomas Telford were employed in the golden days of canal and bridge building. It remains a working yard and operational base for the Canal & River Trust. The site includes a variety of small workshops and spaces including stores, dry dock, offices and the iconic Beech House. It is also home to a heritage blacksmith and his company who run the forge. The buildings, equipment and related artefacts are nationally significant, and provide volunteers who wish to get involved in supporting the yard, the opportunity to learn new skills such as heritage and permaculture, or to help out with practical creative activities to assist the project.
