Transplant Sport is a national charity promoting active recovery for transplant recipients and increasing awareness of the benefits of organ donation. Their aims are to: Raise awareness of the need for organ donation Encourage transplant recipients to lead active lifestyles, and Show appreciation for and remember donors and their families. The charity is run by volunteers, and organises sport and social events for members to connect with others who have had a transplant, and encourage members to get fit and active whilst celebrating their return to health. Post-transplant fitness is essential for a healthy future, and these events help members to engage in sport and social activity whilst promoting the donor register. Members get to enjoy the gift of life they have received and share experiences with each other. Membership is open to all, and members range in age from 2 to over 80. To take part in the charity’s events, you need to have received a life saving: organ transplant (kidney, liver, heart, lung(s), pancreas), or bone marrow from a third party. Family, friends or supporting orgnisations are also welcome to join and membership is free, and Transplant Sport members are encouraged to participate in activity throughout the year. The annual highlight is the British Transplant Games where all entrants have received the life-saving gift of organ donation. Teams from the hospital transplant units join in sports from bowls to 1500m. Details of events are posted on their website, and they include a Young Adults’ Weekend, the Transplant Choir, and a Volleyball Tournament. Everyone is welcome to join in regardless of whether you are experienced or a complete beginner. For more information about joining or fundraising, please follow the link to visit their website.
