The House on Crutches Museum is situated in Bishop’s Castle, in a remarkable timber framed building dating back to Elizabethan times. The story of this unique town is told through local artefacts and memorabilia and through the sharing of knowledge by its team of enthusiastic volunteers. It also provides a glimpse into domestic life at a time when industrial innovations began to find their way into rural homes across the country. The House on Crutches is also home to a small display about the Bishop’s Castle Railway (BCR) 1865-1935. The main BCR collection is now housed in the Bishop’s Castle Railway Weighbridge Museum which hosts monthly open days, details of which can be found on their website by following the related link. The Museum is entirely managed and staffed by volunteers. Opening times are from 2pm to 5pm on Saturdays and Sundays, and all Bank Holidays from Good Friday to the end of September. Visiting groups including those requiring tailored educational visits are welcome at other times during the Museum’s opening season through prior arrangement. Since April 2019 the Museum has been hosting an agricultural display about the life and work of Sir Albert Howard, who was from Shropshire and a champion of sustainable farming. This is an interactive display for all ages. For more information, please follow the link to visit their website. Information about Bishop’s Castle Heritage Resource Centre.
