Silent Solution exists to help people who are unable to speak, but who genuinely need police assistance. If you are in an emergency situation and need to call the police, but cannot speak or make a sound, you need to do the following: dial 999 from your mobile and press 55 when prompted – this alerts the police to the fact you are in a genuine emergency, listen carefully to the emergency operator, respond to their questions and instructions – this can include by coughing or tapping the handset if you are unable to talk. The emergency operator will do everything they can to assess the call by listening to background noise and ask the caller to tap the phone or make a discrete noise as they try to establish if there is a true emergency and assistance is required. For more information about the service, please follow the link to the IOPC website. NB: If you don’t press 55, the call will be terminated. Pressing 55 does not allow police to track your location.
