Shrewsbury Castle originally dates from the 1070s, but was restored in the 18th century by Thomas Telford, who also built Laura’s Tower in the grounds. The Castle remained in private ownership until 1924, when it was acquired by the Corporation of Shrewsbury, and restored as much as possible to its Edwardian condition. It opened to the public in 1926, and now houses the Soldiers of Shropshire Museum, where as well as the fascinating displays of pictures, uniforms, medals, weapons and other equipment, you will find staff ready to help with enquiries about your family’s role in Shropshire’s military life. The Circular Room at Shrewsbury Castle is licensed for civil marriage ceremonies, with the grounds providing a picturesque setting for photographs. A programme of outdoor events arranged by Theatre Severn also takes place within The Castle Grounds, details of which can be found on the Theatre Severn website. Shrewsbury Castle is only a short walk from the railway station, the bus station and Raven Meadows car park, and there is a Park and Ride bus stop near to the entrance.
