Established in 1993, the Society for Storytelling aims to support and promote the most ancient art of oral storytelling. Open to anyone with an interest in the form, it brings together tellers and listeners, professionals and enthusiasts, to celebrate the power of the spoken story as a traditional craft, as a modern form of entertainment and as a powerful educational and therapeutic tool. The Society founded and co-ordinates National Storytelling Week which takes place annually. The Aims of the Society are: To increase public awareness of the art, practice and value of oral storytelling To inform and advise on the nature and scope of storytelling, stories, storytellers and storytelling events To promote the exploration of storytelling in all its diverse forms and various applications To develop contacts and liaise with organisations and individuals whose aims are complementary to ours both nationally and internationally To provide a network for everyone interested in the exchange of knowledge regarding the art of oral storytelling.
