The way you register to vote has changed with the introduction of Individual Electoral Registration. Under the new system everyone is responsible for registering themselves, unlike the old system where the ‘head of the household’ could register everyone living at their address. You can register online at www.gov.uk/register-to-vote which is quick and easy. You will just need to provide a few more details than under the previous system, including your national insurance number and date of birth. This is making registration more secure. Alternatively, if you would like to receive this information in paper format please contact us on 0345 678 9015 or email: registration@shropshire.gov.uk with your name and address. Why register? You need to register in order to be able to vote. If you aren’t registered to vote, you won’t have the chance to have a say on who represents you. Some people also register to vote because they want to apply for credit. This is because credit reference agencies use the register to confirmation where someone lives when they apply for credit in order to counteract fraud.
