The Shropshire Railway Society was formed in 1969 by a small group of enthusiasts to cater for all railway enthusiasts living in Shropshire or interested in its railways. Its interests cover railway history and current railway operation in Britain and abroad. The Society meets at The Gateway Centre, usually on alternate Thursday evenings between September and April, from 7pm to 9.30pm (subject to alteration). These meetings cover a wide variety of railway subjects, presented by local and nationally acclaimed speakers, and non-members are welcome to attend for a small charge of £3. The society also organises a number of visits and excursions each year. Recent forays have covered such destinations as the Welsh Highland Railway, the Mail Rail (near the Postal Museum in London), various national network locations, and the railways of the Isle of Man. Publications include a monthly newsletter, a book on local railways and a CD-ROM of the county’s railways.
