The Sickle Cell Society (SCS), established in 1979, is the only organisation working nationally to provide support for those affected by Sickle Cell Disease (SCD), the most common genetic condition in the UK. They currently have around 3,000 members to whom they provide a regular network of support. SCS assist and enable people living with SCD to realise their full potential whilst successfully managing the challenges they face in living with this life-limiting condition. They develop strategic alliances with partners, including Rare Disease UK and Specialised Healthcare Alliance, and work closely with a wide range of health and research organisations, collaborating to better understand SCD. Their activities include support to those with Sickle Cell Trait (SCT), and health, education and social care professionals through the following: a National Helpline / Online Service (Information Standard certified) providing the latest clinically informed guidance / practical advice, referrals; children’s activities & annual holiday to help them benefit from educational and social support / peer mentoring; geographically focused outreach / awareness raising to areas of high SCD prevalence and isolated communities where the condition is less understood; assisting with medical or social research regarding SCD globally; campaigning for policy to reduce health inequalities through their work as part of the Sickle Cell and Thalassaemia APPG, via seminars and social media; advocating for rights to health, education, welfare, housing and employment for people affected by SCD; eg via Sickle Cell & Thalassaemia APPG; and offering a Public Health England funded Screening Programme, enabling prospective parents to make well informed choices regarding this inherited condition.
