The Vegetarian Society encourages and supports people interested in living a vegetarian lifestyle. Established in 1847, they are the oldest vegetarian organisation in the world, and they work with businesses, government agencies, policy makers and professionals, whilst always remaining independent. They rely on membership subscriptions and donations to carry out vital work, such as: supporting families, individuals, health professionals, caterers and many others through their free advice and information service; teaching professional chefs and members of the public to cook vegetarian food, as well as training hospital caterers and others how to provide nutritious meals without meat; accrediting good practice and allowing vegetarians to shop and eat out with confidence via their Vegetarian Society Approved trademark; running National Vegetarian Week each year to raise the profile of vegetarian issues, alongside other campaigns; promoting vegetarianism in the news, and representing vegetarians across the UK.
