The Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC) aims to ensure those who died in service, or as a result of conflict, are commemorated so that they are remembered for ever. The CWGC works on behalf of the Governments of Australia, Canada, India, New Zealand, South Africa and the United Kingdom to commemorate the 1.7 million men and women from the Commonwealth who lost their lives in the two World Wars. They care for cemeteries, memorials, graves, landscapes, and records at 23,000 locations, in more than 150 countries and territories. The Commonwealth War Graves Commission also manage databases recording the details and commemoration location of every Commonwealth casualty from the First and Second World Wars. It is possible to search the CWGC war records, either to find the military service records of a family member in the armed forces, or to research a soldier who died in the great war, by using their online search tool. In addition, you can explore the CWGC War Archive, which holds over 60,000 items from the Commission’s past, including personal correspondence, maintenance and tour reports, staff records, photographs and press cuttings. The CWGC also runs a programme of events, talks and tours, telling the stories of the fallen and the work being undertaken to ensure they are not forgotten. Large group or school tours can be accommodated by arrangement.
