Living Paintings help people with a visual impairment ‘feel’ visual images. They make special versions of pictures with raised surfaces that come to life when fingers feel them. An audio description directs the fingers telling the stories of the pictures and describing their features. In this way, the senses of touch and hearing combine to make up for the missing sense of sight. Colour reproductions of the pictures which, very importantly, make it possible for the books to be shared with sighted friends, family and peers are included. Blind and partially sighted children, young people and adults; their families, carers, teachers and friends receive these special tactile books from their free, postal library service throughout Britain and Northern Ireland. Items are delivered to the door and returned free of charge through the post.
