Formed in 1989 to commemorate the life and work of one of the foremost poets of the First World War, the Wilfred Owen Association (WOA) has a worldwide and growing membership. The Association promotes events such as visits, talks, and exhibitions to encourage awareness and appreciation of all aspects of Owen’s poetry and to perpetuate literary legacy. The Wilfred Owen Association Journal is published twice-yearly and events are held regularly in London, Oxford, and as often as possible, in Shrewsbury. During the centenary years 2014-2018, the WOA was represented in commemorations in across Shropshire. The WOA works with various church, civic and architectural organisations towards maintenance of the Symmetry memorial in the grounds of Shrewsbury Abbey. Owen’s name appears on the Roll of Honour in the Abbey and at St Julian’s Church, Shrewsbury. He is also commemorated by a plaque at 69 Monkmoor Road, a memorial bench outside St Oswald’s Church at Oswestry, and a plaque at his birthplace, Plas Wilmot in Weston Lane, Oswestry.
